Our Flocks & Herds

  • Modern wooden house with large glass window in a mountainous landscape with tall, rugged mountains in the background and golden grass in the foreground.

    Our Cows

Our herd is made up of two breeds:

The Welsh Black is the only cattle breed native to Wales, and have thrived in the harsh Welsh landscape since before the Roman invasion of Britain. They were once a prized possession of the people of Wales, and still are to us.

Their thick black coats protect them against wind and rain, yet in summer their colouring helps them to cope in the heat. Welsh Blacks are well suited for rougher pastures so do well on our rugged coastline.

We also keep Hereford cattle, a historic British breed known amongst farmers for their calm and relaxed nature, making them easy to handle and look after. They usually welcome guests to our farm.

Both breeds have a strong reputation in the market of rich flavour and tenderness due to a ‘marbling' of fat throughout the meat.

    Our Sheep

We have two flocks of sheep on our farm:

The Black Welsh Mountain are a pedigree flock and a hardy breed with good resistance to the elements and diseases, and they share pasture easily with cattle. Good lambing and mothering instincts form part of the breed’s characteristics.

The Dorsets are smaller in number on our farm but larger in size and personality. These sheep are very adaptable, their thick fleece produces excellent wool for knitwear. Within the Dorsets on the farm are a number of coloured ewes. Their friendly and inquisitive nature has a positive effect on the Black Welsh Mountains, meaning the flock as a whole is approachable out in the field.

  • A landscape view of rolling green hills with modern houses, snow-capped mountains in the background, and a cloudy sky overhead.

    Our Pigs

A characterful and hardy breed, our Tamworth pigs grow to be very social, they are always friendly and talkative on the farm.

As one of the oldest and purest pig breeds, we want to honour their ancient heritage by letting them roam free through the woodlands. As descendants of the wild boar, rooting is in their nature, meaning they thrive in the forests of the farm and forage together in groups.

Tamworths are known as a 'dual-purpose' pig, meaning they produce both excellent pork and lean bacon, and have the reputation of ‘traditional bacon pig.’
